Walnut is obtained from the bark of the tree and the green husks of the fruits. As a substantive dye, walnut can be used without a mordant. Walnut contains juglone and tannins to produce saturated colors and provides extra depth in combination with other dyes. It can be used to produce colors from warm taupe and dark brown to mustard yellow and mauve pink.
Dyeing Processes
- Pre mordant: Pre-treat the material with alum 15% of fabric weight.
- Dyeing: To get satisfying colors, use Walnut at 30-50% of fabric weight.
- Post treatment: Conduct soaping of the dyed material with non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl) for 20-30 mins.
- Hot wash and then cold wash.
