ChestnutChestnut

Chestnut wood is rich in natural tannins, and it gives a warm sandy brown color on natural fibers. It is also appropriate as tannin pre-treatments for cellulose fibers and will give a warm brown base for overdyeing. In addition, chestnut is well known for its ability to dye silk black with the addition of logwood and an iron mordant. Chestnut is tannic enough that it will apply well to all natural fiber types

Dyeing Processes

  • Pre mordant: Chestnut can be used without a mordant, even on cotton. While for best results, use alum mordant at 15% of fabric weight. (Note: Soak your fibers in water for a few hours before mordanting, so that the mordant will penetrate deeply and evenly.)
  • Dyeing: Use extract on mordanted fiber at 5-10% of fabric weight on alum-mordanted fiber to produce a tan brown. The depth of color will depend on the fiber type and how thoroughly it is mordanted.
  • Post treatment: Conduct soaping of the dyed material with non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl) for 20-30 mins.
  • Hot wash and then cold wash.
