Turmeric Turmeric

Turmeric is a common natural dye that comes from the root of Curcuma longa. It contains a chemical called curcumin which is a renowned polyphenol. Turmeric produces vibrant warm yellow color on cotton, silk and wool. The color does fade quickly when washed a lot, so be mindful of this and wash the turmeric dyed fabric on its own just in case. In addition, turmeric is promoted as a dietary supplement for a variety of conditions and a common spice in curry powder.

Dyeing Processes

  • Pre mordant: Use alum at 15% of fabric weight.
  • Dyeing: Bring a pot of water to simmering heat. Add moderate of turmeric (depending on the density of yellow desired) to the pot and simmer for 20-30 mins. Submerge fabric in solution and bring to boil for approximately 1 hour. This will allow the dye to take to the fabric.
  • Post treatment: Conduct soaping of the dyed material with non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl) for 20-30 mins.
  • Hot wash and then cold wash.
