Cellulose Nanocrystal

Cellulose Nanocrystal

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), produced by the acid hydrolysis of wood, cotton or other cellulose-rich sources, constitute a renewable nanosized raw material. CNCs possess the unique properties of high aspect ratio, high surface area, high mechanical strength, and a liquid crystalline nature with a broad range of envisaged uses: for example, in composites, cosmetics and medical devices. CNCs are basically hydrophilic, and they can be functionalized with various materials to satisfy challenging requirements including high performance composites and hydrophobic polymer matrices.

Preparation Method

Alfa Chemistry cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are prepared through chemical purification accompanied by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. And then the cellulose nanocrystals white powder is obtained by spray drying (Figure 1). Our cellulose nanocrystals are easy to disperse in water, DMSO and DMF. It is difficult to disperse in many organic solvents such as ethanol, tetrahydrofuran and acetone.

Applications

Applications

Since cellulose nanocrystal has many advantages including: i) the cellulose nanocrystals white powder is obtained by spray drying; thus, it is easy to disperse in water; ii) dispersions of different concentrations can be prepared according to your specific needs; and iii) high crystallinity and good stability. It is a suitable nanomaterial for a wide range of applications, such as enzyme immobilization, synthesis of antimicrobial and medical materials, green catalysis, biosensing, synthesis of drug carrier in therapeutic and diagnostic medicine, etc.
