Pomegranate Pomegranate

Pomegranate, extracted from the rinds of Punica granatum, can yield soft yellows to green-yellows when used as a dye. With the addition of iron, it can create mossy greens, greys and blacks. And you can over-dye it with indigo to make beautiful dark greens. This dye is high in tannin (19 to 26%); therefore, it works particularly well with cotton and other plant fibers, while you can also use it to dye wool and silk.

Dyeing Processes

  • Pre mordant: Pre-treat the material with alum 15% of fabric weight.
  • Dyeing: To get satisfying colors, use Pomegranate extract at 5-8% of fabric weight. Dissolve Pomegranate in water and simmer with fiber until all the color has been taken up.
  • Post treatment: Conduct soaping of the dyed material with non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl) for 20-30 mins.
  • Hot wash and then cold.
