Onion peel , as the main source of dyes, contains dyestuff called pelargonidin which is the color molecule responsible for the dye. It is boiled to remove the color from the onion peels and can later be dyed without mordanting the fabric. The result is a shade of orange to brown on the fabric. The dye is with very good potential of uptake, adherence to the fabric and has good wash and light fastness.

Dyeing Processes

  • Pre mordant: Use alum 10% of fabric weight at 80°C for 60 mins.
  • Dyeing: To get satisfying colors from onions peels, use onion peels at 20% of fabric weight, and the pH of dye bath needs to be maintained at pH 7 (vinegar, lime or soda ash are used to adjust the pH). Add fabric to the dye bath and maintain at 90°C for 60-80 mins.
  • Post treatment: Conduct soaping of the dyed material with non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl) for 20-30 mins.
  • Hot wash and then cold wash.
