Cutch (Acacia catechu), traditionally known as Katha, is a significant source of natural colorants, primarily valued for its high catechin content. This plant-derived dye is versatile, finding extensive applications in both the textile and pharmaceutical industries. According to recent research, its extract exhibits potent biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-bacterial properties, making it a "functional" dye that offers more than just color.
In textile processing, Cutch is primarily used to dye natural fibers such as cotton, wool, silk, and nylon. Its coloring behavior is significantly enhanced through modern "green" technologies. For instance, microwave (MW) treatment of the extract and the fabric can effectively rupture plant cell walls, leading to higher mass transfer and improved color strength (K/S). When applied to cotton, Cutch typically produces stable, earthy tones.
To achieve superior colorfastness and a wider variety of shades, Cutch is often used in combination with eco-friendly mordants. The research highlights that using bio-mordants like myrobalan or organic anchors like tannic acid can produce excellent color yield and high ratings in wash, light, and rubbing fastness. Furthermore, Cutch-dyed fabrics demonstrate significant antioxidant radical scavenging activity, providing added value for health-conscious consumers and promoting a sustainable, low-effluent textile ecosystem.
