The gallnuts contains highest constitute of naturally occurring tannins: gallotannin, ellagic acid, and glucose. Gallnut, from the oak tree, is one of the best tannin sources that you can use in natural dyeing in the mordanting process. It is favored by natural dyers as it does not impart a strong color to the fabric by itself. Gallnut is used to dye any fiber like cotton, silk and wool. In addition, it can create dark shades using madder or indigo on wool and silk.

Dyeing Processes

  • Pre mordant: Use alum 10% of fabric weight at 80°C for 60 mins.
  • Dyeing: Add the required amount of dye to the dye bath and maintain the solution at about pH 5. Stir well to dissolve the dye. Add fabric to the dye bath and maintain at 90°C for 60-80 mins.
  • Post treatment: Conduct soaping of the dyed material with non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl) for 20-30 mins.
  • Hot wash and then cold wash.
