Fustic extract is an extract prepared from the wood of Maclura tinctoria. It can produce a range of colors from daffodil yellow to deep gold to orange. Fustic is high in tannic acid, which makes it an ideal cotton dye. When combined with indigo fustic yields khaki green; combined with madder and cochineal to make oranges; and mixed with logwood or with iron to produce olive greens. Fustic has a high light resistance and wash fastness.

Dyeing Processes

Pre mordant: Use alum mordant at 15% of fabric weight.
Dyeing: Use at 4-6% of fabric weight for a medium depth of shade. Keep the dyebath temperature at about 85°C for wool and cotton, and 77°C for silk. At a higher temperatures the color will turn to a dull brown yellow.
Post treatment: Conduct soaping of the dyed material with non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl) for 20-30 mins.
Hot wash and then cold wash.
