Bioethanol is considered as an important renewable fuel to partly replace fossil-derived fuels and it can be directly used in vehicles and behaves in a similar fashion to conventional fuels. For example, i) it's derived from a renewable resource i.e. crops (like cereals, sugar beet and maize); ii) the greenhouse gas emissions are reduced; iii) blending bioethanol with petrol will help extend the life of the diminishing oil supplies and ensure greater fuel security; iv) it can be easily integrated into the existing road transport fuel system. Ethanol can be produced from biomass by the hydrolysis and sugar fermentation processes. In order to produce sugars from the biomass, the biomass is pre-treated with acids or enzymes in order to reduce the size of the feedstock and to open up the plant structure. Then the bioethanol can be obtained through the fermentation of sugars. The common production path is showed in figure 1.
