Despite many advantages, the most important disadvantage of native starch is its insolubility in cold water. The modification of starch by carboxymethylation to sodium carboxymethyl starch (CMS-Na) has been proven to be an alternative to increase its properties. Due to the presence of negatively charged functional group (CH2COO-), sodium carboxymethyl starch is with decreased gelatinization temperature, increased solubility and improved storage stability.

Characteristics of this products
Sodium carboxymethyl starch is prepared by etherification reaction of starch with chloroacetic acid under alkaline condition. Preparation method is listed below.
Sodium carboxymethyl starch has a wide range of applications in industries, and it is mostly used as emulsifier, thickener, dispersant, stabilizer, sizing agent, film-forming agent, water retaining agent, etc.
For example, in pharmaceutical industry, it is commonly used as disintegrant; it is used in textile industry as thickening agent in textile printing paste and as sizing agent especially for hydrophilic yarn. Besides, it also can be widely used in oil well drilling, paper & corrugated board, detergent, welding electrodes, food, pesticides, cosmetic, toothpaste, paint, mining and ceramic industries.
