Biodiesel

Currently, petroleum-based sources supply the majority of the world's energy needs. These resources are being consumed swiftly; besides, they cause many problems including the environmental pollution, environmental deterioration and global warming. Biodiesel, as a renewable, environmentally friendly, less toxic, and biodegradable fuel, is an attractive alternative to fossil fuels. Currently biodiesel is produced from animal oil and fat such as beef fat and lard, as well as vegetable oil such as palm oil, canola oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil. Apart from that, biodiesel can be used in pure form or may be blended with petroleum diesel at any concentration in most injection pump diesel engines. Alfa Chemistry is a reliable supplier of biodiesel.

Production Pathway of Biodiesel

Biodiesel can be obtained through four paths, thus, transesterification, blending, microemulsions, and pyrolysis. Out of all these methods, transesterification is one of the most potent and important method of biodiesel preparation.

In biodiesel production the transesterification reaction occurs among oil (triacylglycerols) which may be vegetable oil, animal fat or grease and alcohol in the presence of a catalyst, either chemical (acid or base) or enzymatic. It is a sequence of three reversible reactions in which triacylglycerols are converted to diacylglycerols and then diacylglycerols are converted to monoacylglycerols followed by the conversion of monoacylglycerols to glycerol. The transesterification of triacylglycerols with methanol produces methyl esters along with glycerol (see figure 1&2) [1].

Properties of Our Biodiesel

Due to Biodiesel's longer chain, it has lower volatility than bioethanol, less ignition problems, is highly indissoluble when blended with gasoline, and has higher viscosity and lubricity. The basic properties of our Biodiesel are as followings.
