Logwood Logwood

Logwood is extracted by boiling the stem of the Logwood tree in small pieces for at least an hour and it is used to yield deep, rich, red-purples to orchid blues. In combination with iron, logwood gives blacks. Logwood is mainly used to dye textiles and leather, while it is also used to produce the stain haematoxylin for microscopic slides. Logwood is sensitive to pH, and it tends to change from violet to brown when the dye bath is acidic. Soda ash and lemon juice can be used to adjust the pH.

Dyeing Processes

  • Pre mordant: Use alum at 15% of fabric weight.
  • Dyeing: Use Logwood at 1-2% of fabric weight for a medium depth of shade.
  • Post treatment: Conduct soaping of the dyed material with non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl) for 20-30 mins.
  • Hot wash and then cold wash.
