The fruits of Buckthorn are also known as Persian berries and the juice of these unripe berries is historically used to make the pigment known as "sap green". Dyeing Processes
- Pre mordant: Pre-treat the materials with alum 15% of fabric weight at 80°C for about 60 mins. The addition of 5% cream of tartar during mordanting will improve light fastness.
- Dyeing: Use buckthorn ground on mordanted fiber at 15% of fabric weight, and buckthorn extract at 4-10% of fabric weight until all the color has been taken up.
- Post treatment: Conduct soaping of the dyed material with non-ionic detergent (0.5gpl) for 20-30 mins.
- Hot wash and then cold wash.
