Cationic Starch

Cationic starches can be widely used in papermaking industry. As cationic starches are positively charged, they are easily attracted by the negatively charged cellulose fiber and fillers. As a result, fiber-to-fiber and fiber-to-filler bond are increased. With the development of papermaking industry, the demand for high-quality cationic starches is increasing.

Basic Properties

Generally, there are two types of cationic starches, quaternary ammonium type cationic starch and tertiary amino type cationic starch. Quaternary ammonium type starch is cationic in all pH range, whereas tertiary amino type starch is cationic only in the acidic range. Usage Advices

Add clean cold water into the gelatinization barrel, start the mixer (mixing speed is about 60 rpm), and slowly add the cationic starch (about 5%). Heat to 85℃ by steam or jacket directly and keep the temperature for about 20mins. Dilute the gelatinizing solution to about 1% with clean cold water before use.
It is suggested to add 20% of heavy calcium carbonate to the solution.

Applications

Paper industry

The biggest use of cationic starch is as internal additives in papermaking. Cationic starch can improve the physical properties of paper, such as bursting resistance, tensile strength, folding resistance, anti shedding, and improve the sizing effect of rosin and alum, etc.

Textile industry

Cationic starch can be used as sizing agent in textile industry, because of its good film-forming property, viscosity stability.
