Alginate fibers are natural regenerated fibers derived from brown algae found in marine environments. They are produced by extracting alginate polysaccharides through refined processing and then transforming them into fibers using advanced wet spinning techniques. Alginate fibers are recognized for their eco-friendliness, non-toxicity, flame resistance, biodegradability, excellent biocompatibility, and abundant raw material sources, have emerged as a promising solution in various industries. Moreover, by extending the scope of fiber acquisition from land to the ocean, alginate fibers represent a groundbreaking source for textile fibers. This innovation has opened new research and industrial avenues globally, marking a significant milestone in the fiber manufacturing industry.
What We Offer
At Alfa Chemistry, we have developed a comprehensive range of alginate fiber products tailored to meet diverse industry needs. Our product portfolio includes:
Preparation of Alginate Fibers
The production of alginate fiber involves extracting alginic acid from brown seaweed, followed by fiber formation through a wet spinning process. The key steps include:

- Extraction: First, the alginic acid is extracted from seaweed. This process works by chemically separating alginic acid from other components such as cellulose and protein.
- Spinning Solution Preparation: The extracted alginic acid is dissolved in a suitable solvent to form a viscous spinning solution.
- Wet Spinning: The spinning solution is extruded through spinnerets into a coagulating bath containing calcium ions. This step transforms the solution into solid fibers by ionic crosslinking.
- Post-Treatment: The fibers undergo washing, drying, and sometimes additional treatments to enhance their properties, such as surface smoothness and strength.
Characteristics of Alginate Fibers
- Biodegradability: Alginate fibers are naturally biodegradable, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic fibers. They decompose without harming the ecosystem.
- Moisture Absorption: Alginate fibers have excellent moisture absorption capabilities, which can help regulate humidity and keep products dry.
- Anti-microbial Properties: Some alginate fibers have natural anti-microbial properties, which can inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. This makes seaweed fiber suitable for applications in medical textiles and hygiene products.
- Thermal Insulation: Alginate fibers provide good thermal insulation, making them useful in flame-retardant clothing and other materials.
- Sustainability: Seaweed cultivation is considered sustainable as it does not require freshwater or agricultural land and can be harvested without depleting resources.
Applications of Alginate Fibers
Alginate fibers find applications across numerous industries, driven by their versatile properties and sustainable nature:
- Non-woven Industry: Alginate fibers are widely used in non-woven products such as cleaning wipes, absorbent pads, and filtration materials. Their high absorbency and softness ensure excellent performance and user comfort.
- Textile and Apparel: In the textile sector, alginate fibers are used to produce breathable, lightweight garments. Moreover, they can be blended with other fibers to create fabrics with enhanced moisture management and eco-friendly attributes. The textile and apparel items that they can produce include undergarments, sportswear, formal and casual wear, knitted garments, accessories, flame-retardant home textiles, decorative elements.
- Hygiene and Personal Care: Products like sanitary napkins, diapers, and cosmetic pads benefit from alginate fibers' superior absorbency and skin-friendliness. These fibers contribute to the sustainability of hygiene products by reducing reliance on synthetic materials.
- Medical Applications: Alginate fibers are extensively used in medical dressings, where their biocompatibility and moisture-retention properties support wound healing. These fibers also can be used in bandages, wound packing strips, post-surgical care materials, as well as antibacterial garments.
